The Leadership Game

Effective and compassionate leadership is vital at every level of health and social care. However, individuals and teams must be nurtured and supported to develop the competencies and behaviours required for effective leadership. The Leadership Game is a unique group-learning resource that helps individuals and teams explore the complexities of collective leadership in a relaxed and creative environment.

The game’s learning content is derived from a leadership model developed as part of a Doctorate in Business Administration (Stansfield, 2017). This model is endorsed and used by the iHV. The underpinning theoretical knowledge enables all health and social care practitioners to understand and participate in collective leadership.

The game has 2 key objectives:

  1. To support and encourage discussion and learning around leadership roles
  2. Highlight the need to work together as a team and engage in active listening

“The Leadership Game was developed from my doctoral research on leadership and it makes complex concepts such as collective leadership accessible and meaningful to staff and students. It also provides a fun and interactive approach to learning that can be used with, or without, a facilitator. I use the game regularly in my teaching on leadership with a range of practitioners.”

Dr Karen Stansfield, Associate Dean Enterprise and Engagement, School of Health and Society, University of Salford.

How the game works

The game is very flexible and meets the needs of a modern organisation. It is in effect a ‘pop-up workshop’ that can be used anywhere at any time. The game can be used as an informal activity in the workplace, or as part of more structured training and workshops.

“Learning through playing a game is a novel, but effective and fun approach to education. This game will benefit all members of the teams who play it, helping them to acknowledge, appreciate and utilise their professional leadership contributions in their team and the wider health economy.”

Cheryll Adams. Executive Director, Institute of Health Visiting.

The game contains 2 packs of question and scenario cards that introduce information and encourage structured discussion between players. These cards vary in complexity allowing the game to be tailored to suit the knowledge and experiences of a wide range of individuals:

General Questions These provide a broad overview of leadership that anyone working in health or social care should understand and be able to answer.

Additional Questions These questions are more complex and may require a deeper understanding of leadership. You can use these questions if you feel they are relevant to the group playing.
